If you are thinking of chartering/hiring a RIB/Boat out, here
are some issues to consider:
Income - chartering issues
influencing income
FACTORS |
| i) |
Availability and prompt
response/operation; If you are able to respond to
an enquiry quickly you are more likely to secure the contract.
Also having the ability to provide your boat ready for
charter at short notice will enable you to provide for
those last minute charters. |
| ii) |
Fuel used, diesel, petrol
or gas; This is depends on the charterers preference,
some need economy when diesel or gas have the advantage
and some require performance where petrol is preferred. |
| iii) |
Length/size of vessel;
Larger RIBs (around 9m) are sometimes sort after for particular
tasks or just to impress (however, this is usually to
carry as many persons as possible. 12 is usually the max.
and thus the number of seats is mainly the issue over
length) Larger RIBs may be forced to reduce a daily fee
in order to attract general charter enquiries also. Smaller
RIBs (5m) are in demand for certain applications, seats
are usually the issue) Medium sized RIBs (6 to 8m) are
most versatile. |
iv) |
Number of passenger seats;
As covered above, the more seats (not using the tubes/sponsons)
available for passengers the better. If the seating capacity
is versatile i.e. removable seating pods this would attract
a wider field of client |
| v) |
Age and condition of vessel;
The condition of your vessel must be seaworthy to maintain
its certification. It should go without saying that it
is only seamanlike to retain your vessel in good working
order as a matter of safety. A well-presented vessel will
also attract new and returning clients. Preventative maintenance,
and ensuring equipment is properly serviced is essential,
this will prove cost effective in the long run and save
lost charters and accidents. |
| vi) |
Range of vessel (both in
fuel and licensed operating area); If their is an
advantage to your potential clients to go further from
the port you operate out of, then the larger range capabilities
of your boat, the better. Ensure that your coding (chartering)
licence allows this (see: coding
information ) and your fuel capacity allows the return
trip!! (Plus a safety margin of 20%) |
The above factors will dictate how many charters you can
expect to generate.
Results will provide an advised daily charter rate. In the
UK, probably ranging from £250 to £800 per day.
In your advert, quote a guideline daily charter rate in the
currency you wish to be paid in. Ensure that you state what
you are including in this price; do you have to charge VAT?
Is VAT included in your quoted price? Is fuel included? Is
the Driver/skipper included?
The primary aim from advertising your charter RIB is to generate
an enquiry, hence, it is essential when advertising your RIB
for hire to include a "guideline daily rate" Our
experience shows that clients searching for a RIB will skip
those not displaying a fair price. This figure can be your
starting price; you may need to increase it once your client
has explained their requirements.

Outgoing - expenses to consider when chartering
your RIB
| a) BERTHING FACTORS (varying
in cost and accessibility) |
| |
i) |
Geographic location (Vessels
are required for charter in many aquatic locations, study
the demand centres to investigate whether your area of
operation will satisfy your chartering expectations) |
| |
ii) |
Dry sail (i.e. on a trailer
or racked & launch when needed) (consider cost of
launching each charter) |
| |
iii) |
Marina berth (cost of berth) |
| |
iv) |
Away from a waterside facility
(cost in transport towing) |
| |
v) |
Swinging mooring (cost in antifouling) |
b) RUNNING MAINTENANCE:
Do not "skimp" here. It is essential that your
RIB be maintained in top operating and seamanlike condition.
Costs are dependant on your RIB specification (this is
a very general guideline and not intended to included
any major repairs or replacements) (please email in with
your current costs if you have them, so that we can update
our figures)
Approx. on length only |
| |
i) |
5 to 6 m =£ 300 pa |
| |
ii) |
6 to 7m= £500 pa |
| |
iii) |
7 to 10m= £700pa |

d) LICENCE/CODING FEES
You will have to code your vessel in order to operate
commercially. This is legally required.
Costs involved will include;
· Your Licensing Authority admin. Fee
· A Surveyors' fee to check your boat In 2005 these costs in total will be approx. £100 to £200 depending on the issuer
See: Coding
Information >>
e) REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
This will include any equipment specified by the surveyor
acting for a Licensing Authority, which checks over
your vessel. This specification will often be outlined
in a document forwarded to you when you apply for a
Boat Licence from your chosen Licensing Authority. Generally
all equipment required is safety equipment that you
would sensibly equip a vessel with. The further range
or higher demanding operation area will obviously demand
additional or higher spec. equipment.
